Surprising Health Foods

November 11th, 2009 -- Posted in Health Foods | No Comments »

Sometimes, being on a diet can feel like you can’t eat anything. However, there are a variety of foods that were once thought to be unhealthy but now are believed to offer health benefits.

One example is coffee. Although adding sugar and cream to your cup of joe will inevitably add to the calorie and fat content, the coffee itself has been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes, gallstones, heart disease, kidney stones, Parkinson’s disease, and cirrhosis. For these reasons, you can feel good about drinking coffee in moderation.

Chocolate is another example of a healthy treat. In particular, researchers have found many benefits to consuming dark chocolate, which is rich in flavonoid antioxidants and polyphenols. These compounds are believed to reduce the risk of blot clots, which can lead to stroke or heart attack. Some studies have also shown mood-enhancing effects to eating chocolate, but again it is best enjoyed in moderation.

Pizza can also be a healthy addition to your diet when consumed correctly. This means avoiding the pepperoni, sausage, and unhealthy toppings that add fat and cholesterol to the pizza. Pizza itself can be very healthy due to that tomato sauce, which is rich in an antioxidant called lycopene. Vegetable toppings can make the pizza even healthier, as can switching from a white to a whole wheat crust. Fresh tomatoes can also make pizza a good-for-you treat.

Eggs were once believed to be bad for your health due to the high amount of cholesterol found in the yolks. However, eggs can be a good breakfast option when consumed in moderation, since they are an excellent source of protein as well as omega-3 fatty acids. It is clear that current research disputes some of the claims made by earlier studies. In general, nearly any food can be consumed in moderation. It is best to use your own judgment and try to make smart food choices every day.

With health becoming a more and more important part of peoples lives, many are taking the time to carefully think about the health products they use and the medicines they take. There are so many medicines out there it is important to be careful about which you use as some can have bad side effects. This is a benefit to using alternative and natural medicines, they have significantly less side effects and are more often than not better for the body.

It is important to get advice about natural medicines from a reputable and reliable source, as there are many companies out there who wouldn’t hesitate to feed you a lot of nonsense just so you buy their products.

It is becoming more important also to think about the amount of drugs we take daily or frequently as this can sometimes have a negative effect. Obviously this is not the case for drugs that have been prescribed for long-term use as these are required and necessary for the patient. People are becoming more conscious about the medicines they are taking, as the increased use of medicines can sometimes cause the immune system to become weaker and can also allow the illness the drugs are fighting to become immune to the drugs themselves. This can create big problems if super bugs with no drugs to treat them infect people with very weak immune systems. The results could be devastating.

People are also becoming less keen on filling their bodies with medicines all the time as they feel they are better off using natural medicines and remedies. This can be true however sometimes it is necessary to use conventional medicines. These are good however people are wary or over using them. Especially antibiotics for example.

The over using of this has caused real problems with MRSA. It is the case of the disease becoming resistant to the medicine.
